History of the Race
This year, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation celebrates the 29th anniversary of the Komen Race for the Cure®, the largest series of 5k runs/fitness walks in the world. In addition to being Komen’s 28th anniversary, this year is the first annual Komen Lawton Race for the Cure®. Approximately 2,000 people are expected to participate.
The first event of its kind, the Komen Race for the Cure® was created in 1983 by Nancy Brinker, who established the Komen Foundation to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36.
In 28 years, the Komen Race for the Cure® has grown from one local race with 800 participants in Dallas, Texas, to a series of more than 100 races, with more than 1.5 million people expected to participate in 2011.
Today, the Komen Race for the Cure® series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrating breast cancer survivorship in addition to honoring those who have lost their battle with the disease. At each race event, breast cancer survivors in pink caps and pink T-shirts are celebrated and honored for their strength and courage.
Through events like the Komen Lawton Race for the Cure®, the Central and Western Oklahoma Affiliate has invested over $9 million in community breast health programs in Central and Western Oklahoma. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Affiliate stays in our 47 county service area to fund local breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects. The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.
Survivors
Zeta Tau Alpha sponsors a Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program. Through it, complimentary pink caps and pink T-shirts are provided to all breast cancer survivors who would like to be recognized as such during the race.
The Recognition Program also provides “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back signs for the race. These are given to individuals who wish to honor loved ones they’ve lost to breast cancer, or those who have survived the disease.
All Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition items can be obtained at the race’s Registration Center (Red Coyote) in Oklahoma City. They are also available at the registration booth the day of the race. It is possible supplies will run short, so everyone is encouraged to pick up their items at the Registration Center prior to race day.
Survivors and their families are also invited for breakfast at the exclusive Pink Hat Café the morning of the race. The survivors’ pink caps serve as their family’s ticket for admission to this special event.
All survivors are also urged to attend the Survivor Ceremony inside the ballpark following the race.
Volunteers
It takes hundreds of volunteers to hold the Lawton Race for the Cure®. Tasks that volunteers perform for the race include, but are not limited to:
- Setting up the race course – this involves marking out the course the day prior to the race, working with police to close the streets the evening before the race, setting signage and work stations up along the course, and cleaning up after the race.
- Registration – Simply unpacking and organizing T-shirts for distribution is a major undertaking, as is getting ready for and actually registering participants.
- Signage – Volunteers in this area help to both set up and take down signs prior to and after the race. These signs give directions, list sponsors and provide other important information to race participants.
- Food distribution – Bananas are distributed to race participants. It takes a lot of effort and volunteer hours to get food there, to set up the day before, to distribute the fruit, and to clean up after.
- Water stations – must be set up all along the race course before the race begins, volunteers are also needed to obtain and transport the water to the race, distribute the water during the race and dismantle and clean up the water stations once the race is over.
- Pink Hat Café – where survivors and their families can come the morning of the race for a continental breakfast. It opens at 7:00 a.m. and stays open throughout the race. A lot of volunteers are needed to set this up.
- Area for pre-race ceremony – must be organized and set up prior to the race and dismantled after.
- Clean up – an immense and incredibly important effort that requires a vast number of people to accomplish.
